I stopped by the Amorepacific spa in Bloomingdales in NYC where they offer free 45 minute facials as a complimentary service and use it to help sell their suite of products.
My first time here I purchased the Amorepacific Bio-Enzyme Refining Complex Self-Activating Skin Polisher (whew! what a mouthful) before realizing it was $250.
I was having some hormonal breakouts along my chin and the esthetician recommended this product to help increase skin turnover, help with hyperpigmentation, exfoliate and purge the skin on a regular basis.
After trying this product for about a month, here are some thoughts:
on the surface thoughts
The packaging is nice and sleek. I believe they use what is called an airless pump. The serum has a thicker texture that absorbs well into the skin. It has a slightly perfume-y fragrance that smells "high end". As you may know, I am very particular about fragrances and scents but the scent of this Skin Polisher didn't bother me much at all.
The first time I used this serum I could immediately feel the difference in the my skin. It felt smoother, softer, and had that just-exfoliated feel. I started out by using it morning and night but switched to using it just once a day in the evenings, as I have sensitive skin.
use this as a daily chemical exfoliator
Even though the ingredient list is mostly made up of botanical extracts like red ginseng, honey, parsley, and grape leaf extracts, to me this serum acts as a chemical exfoliator. When looking at the ingredient list I didn't see any regular chemical exfoliators like lactic acid, AHA/BHAs, ascorbic acid, or the like but the way this product functions, it functions the way a chemical exfoliator would work.
The key benefits according to the Amorepacific website:
- Increases skin cell turnover
- Brightens skin tone
- Improves skin texture
After using this serum for a few months, I realized I need to be careful using it with other chemicals like AHA/BHAs, salicylic acid, etc. Think of this serum as your daily chemical exfoliator.
I did notice some lightening of hyperpigmentation and upon using this serum my hormonal breakouts still subside. I like this serum as an evening daily exfoliator although the price is hard to justify.
For $250, you could buy several of Biologique Recherche's P50 Lotions which is an exfoliating toner that works just as well.
Bottomline is, this is a great product that delivers on what it promises however the price may be a big obstacle since similarly effective products can be used in its place.
