After reading so much about the Biologique Recherche P50 Lotion, I just had to try it. It's been hailed as a holy grail item and has been written up in New York Mag as "Jesus in a Bottle". On a recent trip to Paris, I stopped by their spa on the Champs Elysee and picked up a bottle.
After using it for a few weeks, I can attest that it is a must have item.
It's an exfoliating toner which you use after cleansing (or double cleansing). It helps to balance the pH in skin and removes dead skin cells so that your skin is prepped for the serums, essences, creams, etc, that you apply after.
This makes so much sense because the effects of exfoliation can't be emphasized enough. After the first application, my skin was a bit red and there was a bit of a tingling/burning feeling. Apparently if your skin's pH is not balanced, the P50 lotion will cause tingling/burning. Once your skin is balanced, those sensations won't occur.
I opted to buy the P50W version which is the milder version since it was my first time using this product and I also sensitive/dry skin. The unfortunate scent of the original 1970s P50 Lotion has been well documented but I found the smell of the P50W version not bad at all. It smells a bit like vinegar but not at all unpleasant as many have said of the P50 version.
Immediately after even the first use, I noticed that my skin felt soft, supple, smooth - the way that it does when you exfoliate. The women at the spa told me to start at the decolletage and work my way up with the product on a cotton pad using small upward scooping motions. She said to use it morning and night and declared I would love the product after the first use. She was right!
